At a bare minimum, you should see the dentist twice a year for your routine examination and cleaning. This will give the dentist a chance to remove the plaque and tartar that you may have missed while brushing, and spot small problems with your teeth and mouth before they become big ones. Of course, if you have a toothache, or you break or lose a tooth, you will call the dentist, but your dental appointments should not be reserved for emergencies.
Some people, depending on their oral health, may need to see the dentist more than twice a year. You should also contact the dentist’s office any time you feel pain or numbness in your mouth. If your teeth, gums, or other parts of your mouth change in color or texture, your dentist should know.
You should also keep your dentist informed about your life changes. If you are pregnant, or think that you might be, you should let the dentist know, and schedule an appointment. Your oral health and overall health are closely connected, and if you are diagnosed with a disease or medical condition, you should talk with your dentist. If you start a new prescription, vitamin or herbal supplement, talk to your dentist.
