If you feel anxious about your treatment, or if you experience fear when visiting the dentist, sedation dentistry could be a wonderful option for you. Sedation dentistry is also a good option for patients who have a sensitive gag reflex or who have difficulty becoming numb for their treatments. When you receive a sedation dentistry treatment, we will provide you with medication to help you relax and feel calm and comfortable during your procedure.
There are several types of sedation dentistry available. Our dentist will consult with you to determine which type of sedation is the best option for you.
- Nitrous Oxide
Also known as laughing gas, this is a sedative gas that is mixed with oxygen. Our dentist will place a breathing mask over your face, and you need only inhale the gas during your treatment to help you feel more relaxed. Patients who have experienced nitrous oxide sedation often report a “floating” feeling. This is a conscious sedation option, and will wear off after we remove the mask and stop the flow of gas.
- Oral Sedation
If you receive this option, we will provide you with an oral medication, either a pill or a liquid, prior to your treatment to help you feel relaxed and calm. We recommend that you bring someone with you to your appointment to drive you home if you choose oral sedation.
- IV Sedation
With this method, we administer your sedative intravenously (through your veins). This sedation acts very quickly, and we can control your level of sedation to ensure your comfort. This is a form of conscious sedation, meaning that you will be awake during your treatment. You may, however, be so relaxed that you fall asleep. You also might not remember the details of your visit. If you choose IV sedation, please bring someone with you to drive you home and remain with you for a few hours following your procedure.
When you receive a sedation dentistry treatment, we will carefully monitor you during your appointment to ensure your safety and comfort.
